How to Create a Scholarship
Fund
Information
provided by the Scholarship Subcommittee,
Board of
Higher Education and Campus Ministry,
Creating a Scholarship Fund
is a thoughtful and meaningful way to help United Methodist students achieve
their educational goals.
The name of the Scholarship
Fund is a donor decision. Donors
may choose to name their funds for themselves or in honor or memory of someone
else.
If donors wish, scholarship
recipients will be given information about the donor and the person for whom the
fund is named.
Donors determine the
eligibility requirements and also the focus of the support provided by the
funds.
An endowment gift of $10,000
or more can establish a named Scholarship Fund in perpetuity. The endowment gift would be invested by
the Texas Methodist Foundation.
Only a portion of the investment income would be used to provide
assistance to students in order to ensure the protection of the principal.
Alternatively, donors could
provide a gift that could establish a named Scholarship Fund for a specified
number of years.
If a bequest creates a
Scholarship Fund and there is not the opportunity to consult with the person
making the bequest, the Scholarship Subcommittee of the Board of Higher
Education and Campus Ministry, Southwest Texas Conference, will develop the
eligibility requirements in consultation with the executor of the
estate.
