Bishop Joseph B. Bethea Scholarship

Special focus: Scholarships limited to African-American members of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Black Methodists for Church Renewal.  Click here to see the Southeastern Jurisdictional area.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be of African-American parentage (at least one parent).

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

3.      Be accepted and/or enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at any accredited educational institution.

4.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

5.      Be able to establish need for financial aid.

6.      Have a 2.8 or higher grade point average (4.0 scale).

Crusade Scholarships

Special focus:  Candidates shall be from either churches in nations other than the United States or ethnic and racial minorities in the United States.  The goal of the scholarships is to prepare these candidates for leadership in mission both in the church and society.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an ethnic graduate student.

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

3.      Be enrolled as a full-time graduate student.

Number awarded annually:  23 awarded in 1999.

Amount of scholarship:  $1,000 - $2,500.

Edith M. Allen Scholarship

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be of African-American parentage.

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least three years prior to application.

3.      Be accepted and/or enrolled as a full-time graduate or undergraduate student at any accredited educational institution.

4.      Be pursuing a degree in education, social work, medicine, and/or other health profession.

5.      Preference given to students enrolled in a United Methodist-related historically Black college.  (Click here for a list.) 

6.      Have a B+ or higher grade point average.

7.      Be recognized as one whose academic and vocational contributions will help improve the quality of life for others.

Ethnic Minority Scholarship

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be of African, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American/Alaskan Indian, or Pacific Islander parentage (at least one parent).

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

3.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, or a member of a Central Conference of The United Methodist Church nominated by the president of the United Methodist school where enrolled.

4.      Be accepted and/or enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at any accredited educational institution in the United States.

5.      Be recommended by his/her pastor, a lay person in his/her church, and a teacher/professor.

6.      Have a 2.5 or higher grade point average (4.0 scale).

7.      Be able to demonstrate financial need.

HANA Scholarship

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be of Hispanic, Asian, Native American/Alaskan Indian, or Pacific Islander parentage (at least one parent).

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

3.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

4.      Be enrolled as a full-time college junior, senior, or graduate student at any accredited educational institution in the United States.

5.      Be able to identify with his/her particular ethnic community.

6.      Be able to verify academic ability.

7.      Be able to demonstrate financial need.

Number awarded annually:  50.

Amount of scholarship:  Up to $1,000 for undergraduates or $3,000 for graduate students.

Hoover-Lee Scholars

Special focus: Awards are for United Methodist students from Southeast Asia, who upon degree completion must return to their native countries to dedicate their lives to serve humankind.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be accepted and/or enrolled as a full-time student at a United Methodist-related educational institution.

2.      Have a 3.0 or higher grade point average (4.0 scale).

3.      Have a TOEFL score of 500 (for undergraduate) or 600 (for graduate student).

4.      Priority given to students from Malaysia, Singapore, and South China.

Number awarded annually: Three.

Amount of scholarship: $15,000.

Leonard M. Perryman Communications Scholarship for Ethnic Minority Students

Special focus: These scholarships are for United States ethnic minority undergraduate students who intend to pursue careers in religious communication and are enrolled in either their junior or senior years at an accredited college/university in the United States.  The term ‘communication’ is meant to cover media such as audiovisual, electronic and print journalism.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      One of the two scholarships will be awarded to the best United Methodist candidate. The other scholarship will be awarded to the best overall candidate.

2.      Be a United States ethnic minority.

3.      Be enrolled at the junior or senior level in a communication or journalism department at an accredited college or university in the United States.

Number awarded annually:  Two.

Amount of scholarship:  $2,500.

Native American Seminary Award

Special focus: Awards are to provide incentive to Native American students pursuing candidacy in The United Methodist Church, to serve a Native American congregation or ministry/fellowship recognized by The United Methodist Church.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be of Native American parentage (at least one parent) and be able to provide documentation of Native American tribal affiliation.

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least three years prior to application.

3.      Be accepted and/or enrolled as a full-time student at a University Senate-approved school of theology.

4.      Be able to demonstrate financial need.

5.      Be able to demonstrate involvement in his/her Native American community.

                  Number awarded annually: Twelve awarded in 2000.

Amount of scholarship:  An average of $12,000.  Note: One half of the award is a scholarship and one half will be in the form of a loan which shall be forgiven if the student serves at least two consecutive years in a Native American congregation or ministry/fellowship upon graduation or withdraw from theological school.

Richard S. Smith Scholarship

Special focus: The purpose of these scholarships is to aid United Methodist students who are continuing their self-development through higher education. These awards are for the first year of undergraduate study and are non-renewable

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

2.      Must be a graduating senior in high school entering their freshman year of undergraduate study

3.      Have a 2.0 or higher grade point average (4.0 scale).

4.      Be able to demonstrate financial need.

5.      Be an ethnic minority student.

                  Number awarded annually: Two in 1997.

Amount of scholarship:  Up to $1,000.

Women of Color Scholars Program

Special focus: The goals of this program are to: remedy the lack of women of color on United Methodist seminary faculties; increase the number of women of color who teach, write, lecture, and research at the Ph.D. level in all seminaries; and heighten church- wide awareness for the need of women of color in theological education.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be of African, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American/Alaskan Indian, or Pacific Islander parentage (at least one parent).

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least three years prior to application.

3.      Have received a Master of Divinity degree.

4.      Be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree program.

Number awarded annually:  Ten awarded in 2001.

Amount of scholarship:  Up to $10,000.
