Scholarships for

United Methodist Students:

Accepted and/or enrolled as full-time students at a

United Methodist-related educational institution.

The following scholarships are for United Methodist students planning to attend one of the 124 educational institutions related to The United Methodist Church.  These institutions are located throughout the United States and have enrollments ranging from 200 to 15,000 students.

Allan Jerome Burry Scholarship

Special focus: Scholarship designed to recognize a United Methodist student’s outstanding academic performance, leadership skills, and participation in the activities of a United Methodist-related campus ministry or chaplaincy program at his/her institution.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be nominated by campus ministry unit or college chaplain.

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least three years prior to application.

3.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States, or a member of a Central Conference of The United Methodist Church.

4.      Have a 3.5 or higher cumulative academic average (4.0 scale).

5.      Be able to document financial need.

Number awarded annually:  One.

Amount of scholarship:  $500 - $1,200.

Deadline:  February 1.

Application form:   Applications have to be requested from the campus minister/chaplain.  Only one student from each campus ministry/chaplaincy should be nominated by a campus minister/chaplain.

 

 

 

Annual Conference Merit Scholarships

Special focus: Awards are for ‘merit’ in terms of academic scholarship, church involvement, financial need, special vocational preparation for ministry or other service, or a combination of these factors.

                  Eligibility requirement:

Be nominated by your local church. A local church may nominate no more than one student annually.

Number awarded annually: 1-2 awarded by each annual conference.

Amount of scholarship:  $500 to $1,000.

Deadline:  Varies according to each local church.  Church nominations must be submitted to the appropriate annual conference by April 18.

Double Your Dollars for Scholars Program

Eligibility requirement:

Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

Number awarded annually: 350 awarded on first-come, first-served basis.

Amount of scholarship: $1,000 matching scholarship to student receiving a local church-sponsored $1,000 scholarship.

Deadline:  Varies according to local church.  Each local church can submit only one nomination, which has to be received by the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation after February 1.

J.A. Knowles Memorial Scholarship

Special focus:  Scholarships limited to Texas residents enrolled in United Methodist-related educational institutions in Texas.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be a Texas resident.

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

3.      Be accepted and/or enrolled as a full-time student at a United Methodist-related educational institution in Texas.   Click here for list of schools. 

4.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Number awarded annually:  50.

Amount of scholarship:  $1,000.

Deadline: Varies according to educational institution.

Priscilla R. Morton Scholarship

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

2.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

3.      Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at a United Methodist-related educational institution.

4.      Preference given to students with a 3.5 or higher college grade point average (4.0 scale).

Number awarded annually: Information could not be located.

United Methodist Foundation Annual Conference Scholars Program

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

2.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

3.      Be either an entering freshman at a United Methodist-related college/university or first-year student at a United Methodist-related seminary/theological school.

4.      Be nominated by a local church and the Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry of his/her annual conference.

Number awarded annually: One awarded by each of the 65 annual conferences.

Amount of scholarship: $1,000.

Deadline: Varies for each annual conference.

United Methodist Foundation Scholars Program

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

2.      Be enrolled as a full-time student at a United Methodist-related educational institution.

3.      Be nominated by his/her institution.

Number awarded annually: One award for each class at each United Methodist-related educational institution; 460 available in 2000.

Amount of scholarship: $1,000 - except for theological and professional schools where award amount is $3,000.

Deadline: Varies according to institution. Nominations by the institutions must be received by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry by September 1.

Verde Dickey Memorial Scholarship

Special focus: Scholarships are targeted to students majoring in education or physical education, and planning to become teachers or coaches.

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

2.      Be enrolled as a full-time student in the junior or senior year of study at a United Methodist-related educational institution.

3.      Preference given to students with a 3.0 or higher college grade point average (4.0 scale).

Number awarded annually: Two awarded in 2002.

Amount of scholarship: $7,500.

Deadline: May 1.
