Scholarships for

United Methodist Students:

Graduate Students only

This category of scholarships is divided into two sections. 

 

SECTION I contains scholarships awarded only to students at United Methodist-related educational institutions.  Click here for a list of the United Methodist-related educational institutions.  The list can be searched according to state.  In addition, the list contains links to the educational institutions’ web sites.

 

SECTION II contains scholarships awarded to students at any educational institution.

 

 

 

I.      Scholarships for graduate students accepted and/or enrolled at

     United Methodist-related educational institutions.

 

 

Dempster Graduate Fellowships

Special focus: Awards made to graduate students selected for their intellectual competence, academic achievement, promise of usefulness in teaching careers, personal qualities, clarity of purpose, and commitment to Christian ministry and the preparation of pastoral leadership for the church.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be a member of a United Methodist Church.

2.      Have plans to teach in seminaries, or to teach religion and related subjects in universities and colleges.

3.      Have received the Master of Divinity degree or its equivalent from a United Methodist seminary, or be in a Ph.D. program or its equivalent at one of these schools at the time of application.

Number awarded annually:  Five.

Amount of scholarship:  Up to $11,000.

Deadline: February 1.

United Methodist Foundation Seminary Awards

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member in a United Methodist Church for at least one year before application.

2.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

3.      Be accepted and/or enrolled as a full-time student in a United Methodist-related seminary or professional school.

4.      Be nominated by your institution.

Number awarded annually:  Three scholarships (one for a first-year student, one for a second-year student, and one for a final-year student) are provided to each United Methodist-related seminary and professional school.

Amount of scholarship: $3,000.

Deadline: September 1.

United Methodist Seminary Award

Special focus: Awards are for seminary students preparing for the pastoral ministry as an ordained elder.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member in a United Methodist Church for at least three years before application.

2.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

3.      Be enrolled as a full-time student in a United Methodist-related seminary approved by the University Senate.

4.      Be a second-year, third-year, or first-career student.

5.      Be nominated by his/her seminary.

Number awarded annually:  Two awards are available to each of the thirteen United Methodist Church Seminaries for each academic year.

Amount of scholarship: $1,000 - $1,500.

Deadline: Varies according to school.

II.   Scholarships for graduate students accepted and/or enrolled at

 any educational institution meeting the scholarship guidelines.

 

 

Bishop James C. Baker Scholarship

Special focus: Scholarships are for campus ministers in higher education doing advanced studies who have had at least three years of professional experience in campus ministry.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least three years prior to application.

2.      Have a Master of Divinity degree and expect to remain in campus ministry.

3.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Number awarded annually:  Seven awarded in 2002.

Amount of scholarship:  Up to $4,000.

Esther Edwards Graduate Scholarship

Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be a female graduate student pursuing an executive management career in higher education administration with a United Methodist-related school, college, or university.

2.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least one year prior to application.

3.      Preference given to students employed by a United Methodist-related school, college, or university.

Number awarded annually:  One.

Amount of scholarship: $5,000

Georgia Harkness Scholarship

Special focus: Scholarship is for women over 35 years of age who are preparing to be an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church as a second career.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member in a United Methodist Church for at least one year before application.

2.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

3.      Be working toward a basic seminary degree at a University Senate-approved school of theology.

Number awarded annually:  Up to 40.

Amount of scholarship: $500 to $1,500.

John Q. Schisler Graduate Awards

Special focus: Awards are designed to assist outstanding graduate students who have chosen a career as a professional Christian educator in the local church.  The awards are for students pursuing ministry in Christian education, preparing to become a lay professional, ordained deacon in full connection, or diaconal minister.  The award is not for students planning to be ordained elders.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member in a United Methodist Church for at least three years before application.

2.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

Number awarded annually:  Ten were awarded in 2001.

Amount of scholarship: $500 - $2,000.

Reverend Charles W. Tadlock Scholarship

Special focus: Scholarship is for people from the Missouri East and Missouri West Annual Conferences and others preparing for parish ministry as an ordained elder.  Click here for information about annual conferences.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member in a United Methodist Church for at least one year before application.

2.      Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

3.      Be a certified candidate for ministry as an ordained elder by an annual conference of The United Methodist Church.

4.      Have completed first year toward the Master of Divinity degree.

5.      Be enrolled in a University Senate-approved school of theology.

Number awarded annually:  Information could not be located.

Amount of scholarship:  Up to $3,000.

Rosalie Bentzinger Scholarship

Special focus: Scholarship is designed to recognize a United Methodist student pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Christian education in a graduate theological seminary.

                  Eligibility requirements:

1.      Be an active, full member of a United Methodist Church for at least three years prior to application.

2.      Be a member in good standing as a deacon in full connection, diaconal minister, or deaconess.

3.      Be accepted and/or enrolled as a full-time doctoral student in a University Senate-approved school of theology.

4.      Have a 3.5 or higher grade point average (4.0 scale).

5.      Be able to document financial need.

Number awarded annually:  One awarded in 2001.

Amount of scholarship: $5,000.

Deadline: February 1.
